Women need a prenatal vitamin that provides the maximum benefits to mother and child. Prenatal Multi is an herb-free prenatal multivitamin with essential nutrients such as calcium and folic acid that help meet important nutritional needs before, during and after pregnancy.

While every healthy diet requires folic acid, a woman's need for the nutrient doubles during pregnancy. Healthful diets with adequate folate may reduce a woman's risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord birth defect, according to the Food & Drug Administration.

Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate found in supplements such as prenatal vitamins. Folic acid (or folate) plays an important role in normal neural tube closure early in pregnancy. (1) The embryonic brain and spinal cord start out as a flat plate that is supposed to roll up and then join at the edges to form a tube. The folic acid in these pregnancy vitamins supports the development of normal tubes and proper formation of the spine, skull and brain.∗

Research demonstrates the folic acid in this prenatal vitamin also plays a role in the normal growth of the head, in particular the cleft palate.∗ Folic acid , like that in this prenatal multivitamin, is an important nutrient to supplement with during early pregnancy. (2)

Because the folic acid found in pregnancy vitamins is needed for healthy DNA synthesis, it is also especially important in the first trimester of pregnancy to provide maximum benefits to mother and child.∗ The safe upper limit each day is 1,000 mcg (1 mg). (3) These prenatal vitamins contain 976 mcg, or 244% of the daily value in each daily dosage.

A pregnant woman has a higher demand for the iron like that found in this prenatal vitamin due to the nutritional needs of the developing fetus. While a non-pregnant woman needs 15 mg of iron a day, the demands increase dramatically for a pregnant woman. She needs about 27 mg of iron daily from natural sources and supplements such as a prenatal multivitamin. The additional iron such as that found in pregnancy vitamins helps meet demands created by the higher blood volume that flows in both the mother and fetus. And the iron found in these prenatal vitamins contributes to the mother's health at the time the baby is born because of the demands on her body created by the blood loss associated with delivery. (4)

The iron in this prenatal vitamin is essential to the formation of healthy red blood cells, as well as carrying oxygen via those same cells for baby and mother. Iron supports red blood cell production for both the mother and fetus. Adequate amounts of iron in the diet from sources such as these pregnancy vitamins support proper growth of the fetus. Levels of iron such as that found in this prenatal multivitamin in the mother's system can affect the likelihood of a normal delivery date and birth weight. (5) ∗Low iron intake causes the mother's iron stores to be depleted. Women with inadequate levels of iron from sources in their diet such as prenatal vitamins run the risk of developing iron deficiency anemia. (6) These pregnancy vitamins provide 167% of the daily value in each daily dosage.

The antioxidant Vitamins A, C and E in this prenatal multivitamin support the health of the mother. Vitamin A, in the form of beta-carotene, works with other ingredients in these prenatal vitamins to help the body’s efforts to fight against the deleterious effects of oxidative stress. Regular dosages of the pregnancy vitamins also contribute to proper growth of the fetus, in particular the retina in the eye. (7) ∗

The Vitamin A in these prenatal vitamins is also positively associated with both proper fetal growth and birth weight.∗ This prenatal vitamin delivers 100% of the daily value of in each daily dosage.

Sufficient levels of Vitamin E such as that found in this pregnancy supplement are positively associated with normal fetal growth and birth weight. The nutrient found in this prenatal multivitamin supports the proper flow of blood of placenta and fetus during pregnancy. (8) ∗

The Vitamin D in these prenatal vitamins supports fetal skeletal development and tooth enamel formation. (9) A study performed in the United Kingdom during the 1990s demonstrated that higher maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy was associated with improved bone-mineral content and bone mass in children at 9 years of age. (10) The vitamin D such as that found in this prenatal vitamin also contributes to the proper transfer and use of calcium by the growing fetus. Much of that transfer occurs during the final trimester. (11) ∗

The calcium in this prenatal multivitamin supports fetal bone development. Maternal calcium requirements double during pregnancy. This nutrient helps to maintain bone density for new mothers as the fetus grows.∗

The zinc in this prenatal vitamin contributes to proper fetal growth and development. Zinc is a component of hormones and neuropeptides. The nutrient and is used for cell proliferation and differentiation (12) ∗

The magnesium in this prenatal multivitamin also helps in to maintain normal blood pressure levels that are already within the normal range. That ingredient in these pregnancy vitamins and reduce constipation associated with pregnancy.∗

Engineered to be absorbed quickly, this prenatal multivitamin is ideal for women with sensitive stomachs. It sets the medical standard of care for all pregnant women. This prenatal vitamin is designed for females ages 20 and up. Take 2 tablets of the prenatal vitamins twice a day. Each bottle of pregnancy vitamins contains a month supply of 120 tablets.
